BRIEF: South Shore Line rail service suspended after blizzard

Feb. 25--South Shore Line rail service has been suspended to and from Chicago due to blizzard damage in Indiana.

In the interim, Metra will accept South Shore tickets on the Metra Electric District, according to a news release.

The storm on Wednesday evening snapped a power line near State Road 249 Bridge in Porter County, Ind., and that wire is dangling just above the South Shore Line's power system, said John Parsons of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District. Trains cannot travel through the affected area.

In addition, the storm knocked out power to South Shore's grade crossing warning devices, affecting 18 crossings.

Service will be suspended until repairs are made to the conductor and the crossing devices.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
