BRIEF: South Loop crash kills 2, hospitalizes 1

Dec. 22--At least two people were killed and a man was hospitalized in a single-vehicle crash in the South Loop early Sunday.

About 2:45 a.m., police were called to the 1200 block of South Clinton Street after an SUV struck a pole and caught fire, police said.

Two men, ages 42 and 25, were pronounced dead on the scene, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Officials at the medical examiner's office ruled the 25-year-old was killed by blunt force trauma and thermal injuries during the collison. His death was ruled an accident. An autopsy of the 42-year-old man killed was not available Sunday.

A third man, 26, was transported to John H. Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said.

The CPD's Major Accidents Unit was investigating early Sunday.

Firetrucks and ambulances were on the scene, and a small crowd gathered in a parking lot on Clinton to look at the SUV, which was smoldering as crews finished putting out the fire.

As of early Sunday morning, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office had not been notified of the two deaths.
