BRIEF: Chicago man charged in fatal shooting

Jan. 22--A 26-year-old man is facing murder charges after authorities said he fatally shot a man in South Shore this week.

Christopher Garcia, of the 8000 block of South South Shore Drive, was charged with first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery among other charges in connection with the Jan. 20 slaying of 26-year-old Derrick McIntyre.

About 10:15 a.m., McIntyre was in his home in the 7800 block of South Coles Avenue when Garcia shot him, police said.

McIntyre was taken to John H. Stroger Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead at 10:44 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Police arrested one person after a foot chase near the crime scene. Garcia was formally charged with the murder early Thursday and is scheduled to appear in bond court Thursday afternoon.
