Snow through midweek to give way to higher temperatures

Feb. 15--Blowing and drifting snow could cause some hazardous driving conditions Monday morning, but the snow that started falling in Chicago at midday Sunday wasn't expected to amount to more than a few inches.

Snow Sunday afternoon was expected to amount to about 2 inches downtown, with 2 to 3 additional inches into the evening, according to the National Weather Service. The snowfall tapered off into flurries late Sunday.

The Department of Aviation said snow and ice at O'Hare International Airport prompted the cancellation of 270 flights by Sunday evening, and another 60 flights were grounded at Midway.

Average flight delays of around 90 minutes were reported at O'Hare.

"Gusty southeast winds will likely cause blowing and drifting snow, which could lead to difficult travel in some areas," especially later Sunday evening and into the early morning Monday, according to a hazardous weather statement from the weather service.

There's a chance of snow again Monday and Tuesday, with highs in the 30s both days. The end of the week is expected to see a warmup, with highs in the 50s on Friday and the upper 40s on Saturday.

According to WGN's Tom Skilling, after a brief reprieve, as the low pressure moves to the east Monday, it looks as though another fast-moving low pressure "clipper" will approach our area from the northwest Monday night, -- likely spreading snow over portions of our area Tuesday. Initial indications are that this system will be less intense and may pass far enough south to give the Chicago area a "glancing blow" -- perhaps some minor accumulations over southern portions and lesser amounts to the north.
