BRIEF: Smartphone lockers now out of commission at Cook criminal courthouse

April 04--Anyone visiting the Leighton Criminal Court Building on Monday should be doubly sure not to bring a smartphone or other banned items, as public storage lockers at the courthouse were taken out of service over the weekend.

The lockers were being abused and presented security problems "as courthouse patrons have placed contraband in them, placing staff members at risk when they engage the individuals about the illegal items," according to a statement from Chief Judge Tim Evans' office in March.

The free storage lockers were installed for people to store smartphones, computer tablets and other electronic devices at the courthouse because they were banned at Leighton in 2013.

Although smartphones are allowed in other courthouses, lockers there also are being removed.
