BRIEF: Small plane crashes after departing Hawthorne Municipal Airport

March 21--A pilot was injured Monday after her light-sport plane crashed near Hawthorne Municipal Airport, officials said.

The crash occurred about noon after an Airborne XT-912 departed the airport in the 12000 block of Crenshaw Boulevard, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

It crashed in the 3600 block of West 120th Street and burned, said Lt. Gary Tomatani of the Hawthorne Police Department.

The pilot was treated by paramedics and taken to an area hospital, he said. Her condition was not immediately known.

Initial reports indicated that the weight-shift-control plane had collided with a vehicle, Tomatani said. But when police arrived at the scene, they could not find any vehicles in the area, he said.

Firefighters reported that smoke was coming out of the aircraft, Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Keith Mora said.
