BRIEF: Skilling: Winter to make comeback on howling winds

Feb. 08--With a high of 43 degrees at O'Hare International Airport, and a low of 34, Sunday's average temperature was 14 degrees above normal.

This was the 17th straight day the city logged above average temperatures. Monday readings will average closer to normal, as a major shift in our weather pattern begins. Satellite imagery late Sunday showed polar air surging across the Plains and the upper Midwest. Clouds displayed a standing wave pattern, suggesting powerful north winds in the upper atmosphere.

Winds gusted up to 62 mph at Mobridge, S.D. Blizzard and high wind warnings were in effect across much of the region. This buckle in the jet stream will sweep polar air across the Great Lakes in coming days, bringing snow and subzero windchills to the Chicago area.
