BRIEF: Skilling: Strong winds, thunderstorms as cold front hits Chicago area

Nov. 11--A wind advisory will be in effect from late Wednesday afternoon through Thursday, gusting at 50-60 mph, as the center of a major storm system moves out of Kansas through Iowa into Wisconsin.

Swinging through our area Wednesday evening, a cold front could trigger severe thunderstorms tapping into the high winds aloft, damaging trees and downing power lines in affected areas.

We have experienced a very mild, sunny start to November, with 100 percent sunshine the past three days (the last time that happened in November was 1978). Five of the first 10 days this month had 100 percent sunshine (normal for the entire month is just two days).

Much colder air will follow into northern Illinois as the low pressure pulls away into Canada, with highs on Friday barely making it into the lower 40s -- along with a chance of snowflakes.
