May 06--Chicagoans will greet warming southwest winds Friday, with afternoon highs reaching into the 80s for just the third time this spring. (We recorded 83 degrees April 18 and 25.)
With the southwest flow reaching into Lake Michigan, close to 80-degree readings may be observed along the shoreline.
Mild temperatures in the 60s could last through Friday night before a strong cold front moves from north to south through northeast Illinois and eventually northwest Indiana on Saturday morning.
Saturday's high temperatures here will most likely occur ahead of the front, with cold high pressure and a strong wind shift to the northeast off the chilly waters of southern Lake Michigan immediately following the frontal passage. Temperatures will probably sharply drop, then slowly fall the rest of the day.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will likely precede the cold front Saturday morning. Then after a dry Mother's Day Sunday, a low-pressure system is expected to develop in the central Plains and move slowly east, producing a potentially extended period of showers and thunderstorms that could affect the Chicago area a good part of the upcoming workweek.
