BRIEF: Six buildings evacuated after city workers rupture gas line in Hollywood

May 16--More than 100 people were evacuated from their homes and businesses in Hollywood on Saturday afternoon after a gas line ruptured, authorities said.

The leak was reported about noon in the 1700 block of North Cahuenga Boulevard, near the 101 Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. There were no fires or injuries reported, but fire officials issued precautionary evacuations for six buildings in the vicinity.

The six-inch gas line was damaged by a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crew working in the area, fire officials said. Southern California Gas Co. was repairing the leak and estimated it would take up to four hours to fix.

Fire officials have set up a precautionary evacuation area bounded by Hollywood Boulevard, Franklin, Ivar, and Wilcox avenues. The area is two blocks west of the Capitol Records building.
