Feb. 01--A Simi Valley man wielding a machete assaulted a man and tried to break into a home where a family was sleeping before he was arrested early Sunday, police said.

Amado Hernandez, 29, was arrested about 2:30 a.m. after police dogs found him hiding in a detached garage on the family's property in the 1400 block of Patricia Avenue, according to the Simi Valley Police Department.

The residents of the house were unharmed, police said, but officers found another man who lived on the property who had suffered a head injury after being struck with the machete.

Hernandez was booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of felony vandalism for damaging the house and a vehicle, according to police.
