BRIEF: SI cover touts Cubs as 'last great American sports story'

May 10--The Cubs grace a regional Sports Illustrated cover that depicts the team celebrating after Javier Baez' walkoff home run against the Washington Nationals on Sunday.

The Mother's Day scene-setter, titled "Just Maybe ... Right? Charles P. Pierce on the Last Great American Sports Story," chronicles the Cubs' seventh consecutive victory. It hits newsstands Wednesday.

Pierce frames the Cubs' 24-6 start in historical perspective and explores the reason and people behind the National League leaders' dominance.

"The last time they got off to a start this hot was in 1907," Pierce writes. "They won the World Series that year, and they won it the next year, too. That was back when uniforms were flannel and when the Republicans nominated people like William Howard Taft and Teddy Roosevelt."

The national SI cover features Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully.
