BRIEF: Shots fired by police on South Side; no injuries reported

July 26--Shots were fired by police on a suspect in the Englewood neighborhood Sunday morning, but no one was believed to have been injured, authorities said.

The Independent Police Review Authority was notified about 11:20 a.m. of the incident in which shots were fired but no one was hit by gunfire in the 700 block of West 61st Street, said spokesman Larry Merritt.

Police News Affairs said officers were involved in a foot pursuit on 61st Street when the 19-year-old man they were chasing pointed a gun at an officer. The officer then fired his weapon, but no one was struck.

The 19-year-old was taken into police custody, and charges were pending, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.
