BRIEF: Shortstop Erick Aybar returns to Angels amid series of roster moves

Aug. 16--REPORTING FROM KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Angels made a flurry of roster moves Sunday, but none involved shortstop Erick Aybar, who has missed the last three games because of tightness in the left side of his lower back. Aybar, in fact, is in the lineup for Sunday night's series finale against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

But he will have a new backup shortstop in Ryan Jackson, who was called up from triple-A Salt Lake to replace Taylor Featherston, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of an upper-back strain.

The Angels also demoted starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker, who gave up 13 runs and 16 hits, including four homers, in 7 1/3 innings of his last two starts, to Salt Lake and placed reliever Cory Rasmus on the 15-day disabled list because of a right forearm strain.

Relievers Mike Morin and Cam Bedrosian were called up from triple-A. The Angels will need a fifth starter on Thursday night, and there is a good chance right-hander Nick Tropeano will be called up from triple-A for that game.

To make room for Jackson on the 40-man roster, the Angels moved pitcher C.J. Wilson, who is undergoing season-ending elbow surgery, on the 60-day disabled list.
