BRIEF: 1 charged after Sheriff's deputies happen on shootout on South Side

Sept. 17--A South Side man has been charged with multiple felonies after authorities say he pointed a gun at Cook County Sheriff's Office deputies who happened into an exchange of gunfire in Hyde Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened near 51st Street and Drexel Boulevard about 3:50 p.m., authorities said.

The two civil process deputies were on duty when they happened on the gunfire, Cook County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sophia Ansari said.

One of the deputies fired a weapon, though no one was hit. A gun was recovered, police said.

Aaron McNeil, 27, of the 5500 block of South Loomis Boulevard, has been charged in connection with the incident. The deputies observed him shooting a gun in the 800 block of East Drexel Square Drive before he pointed the gun at the deputies and fled the scene, police said.

McNeil has been charged with multiple weapons offenses, including aggravated assault of a peace officer and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. He is expected to appear in court Thursday.
