BRIEF: Shedd's rescue sea otter pup finally gets a name

March 18--Shedd Aquarium's playful sea otter pup who was rescued off the California coast has a new name: Ellie.

The new name for the cute critter, formerly known as Pup 719, was revealed Friday. Shedd members voted for the name, which beat several other names related to the area in Carmel, Calif., where the southern sea otter was rescued. Those other names include Gilly, for California's Guillemot Island; Cali, the shortened version of California; Poppy, for the California state flower; and Reya, derived from Monterey Bay.

The pup arrived in Chicago in January after the Monterey Bay Aquarium rescued the pup on Carmel Beach.

The pup was scheduled to make its first public appearance Friday in the Regenstein Sea Otter habitat in the Abbott Oceanarium.
