Jan. 25--Another Pacific white-sided dolphin calf is expected at Shedd Aquarium, the institution announced Monday.
Pregnant for the first time and expecting in late spring is Katrl (kuh-TREEL), the Shedd's 28-year-old female dolphin.
As with Piquet, the Shedd female that has had two successful births since 2012, the sire is Lii, a male at Miami Seaquarium in Florida.
Although abundant in the wild, Pacific white-sided dolphins, smaller and more nimble than the more familiar Atlantic bottlenose variety, are rare in captivity with fewer than 20 in North American facilities. Shedd authorities said they are hopeful but cautious, as first-time dolphin pregnancies often result in losing the calf.
