BRIEF: Sewage spill closes two marinas in Huntington Harbour

Nov. 07--Two marinas in Huntington Harbour were closed Thursday to swimmers and divers until further notice because of a sewage spill, Orange County health authorities said.

A backed-up pipe in Westminster sent about 1,000 gallons of raw sewage into a storm drain system that feeds into Huntington Harbour, said Larry Honeybourne, assistant director for the environmental health division of the Orange County Healthcare Agency.

The water at Sunset Aquatic Marina and Portofino Cove Marina hasn't been tested, but both were closed out of caution.

"The reality is a lot of people aren't going to be getting into that area," Honeybourne said. "Though sometimes divers will go in there to clean the bottoms of boats."

Honeybourne said the water will be tested Friday and Saturday, and the closure will be lifted once the bacteria levels return to acceptable levels.
