BRIEF: Several residents displaced by Vernon Hills fire

Nov. 25--Several residents were displaced when a fire broke out in northwest suburban Vernon Hills on Monday morning, authorities said.

The blaze started at a two-story building around 9:30 a.m. in the 900 block of Jackson Court, according to a statement from the Countryside Fire Protection District.

When first responders arrived, they saw smoke coming from the attic area of the town home, officials said. The home's owner told officials that a plumber was using a torch in the bathroom wall on the second floor, which firefighters later confirmed was in the area where the fire started, the statement read.

The plumber was treated at the scene, and no other injuries were reported, officials said.

The fire caused three units in the building to be uninhabitable, but it was unknown how many residents were displaced, officials said.

The blaze is still under investigation, according to the statement.

Countryside Fire Protection officials urge residents to have their heating systems inspected by qualified professionals.
