Nov. 19--Seven players from defunct Chivas USA were chosen by other Major League Soccer clubs in a dispersal draft Wednesday, the league said.
After being acquired by MLS, struggling Chivas USA was disbanded after this season ended and the league sold the club's rights to a group of 22 Southern California investors. The team will be rebranded and begin play in 2017.
In the dispersal draft, former Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy was picked first, by FC Dallas. The expansion team New York City FC then chose midfielder Matthew Dunn.
The others selected were: midfielder Thomas McNamara (D.C. United), defender Donny Toia (Montreal Impact), forward Caleb Calvert (Colorado Rapids), forward Kristopher Tyrpak (San Jose Earthquakes) and midfielder Marco Delgado (Toronto FC).
Erick Torres, who led Chivas USA with 15 goals this season, was not eligible for the dispersal draft because the MLS is still negotiating a long-term contract to keep Torres. The forward has played the last two seasons on loan from Chivas of Guadalajara.
Other former Chivas USA players who were not selected will take part in the re-entry draft if they're eligible, or will be available via the waiver draft Dec. 10, the MLS said.
