BRIEF: Series preview: Padres at Cubs

Season series: First meeting. Padres 4-3 in 2014.

Friday: 1:20 p.m., ABC-7. RH James Shields (1-0, 2.08) vs. RH Jason Hammel (1-0, 4.50).

Saturday: 1:20 p.m., CSN. RH Tyson Ross (1-0, 3.75) vs. RH Kyle Hendricks (0-0, 10.38).

Sunday: 1:20 p.m., WGN-9. RH Andrew Cashner (0-2, 4.09) vs. LH Jon Lester (0-1, 7.84).

Who's hot: Padres starters have a National League-low 2.43 ERA. Left fielder Justin Upton has hit safely in all 10 games this season. The Cubs have won four of their past five games. The Cubs' bullpen has a 1.38 ERA. Shortstop Starlin Castro has hit safely in seven of the Cubs' first eight games.

Who's not: Padres second baseman Jedd Gyorko is 1-for-11. Third baseman Will Middlebrooks is 2-for-10 with three strikeouts. Cubs reliever Neil Ramirez suffered right shoulder discomfort and could be the seventh player placed on the disabled list, pending an MRI. Jon Lester has allowed 18 hits in 10 1/3 innings.
