BRIEF: 'Selma' director to speak at Northwestern Monday

May 14--"Selma" director Ava DuVernay, the first black woman to be nominated for a Golden Globe for best director, will speak at Northwestern University on Monday after a screening of "Selma."

DuVernay is scheduled to chat with a Northwestern professor and then take questions from the audience after the 5 p.m. screening, which will be held at the Alice Millar Chapel, said Abiola Aderonmu, marketing co-director for event host A Productions. The chapel, at 1870 Sheridan Rd. in Evanston, is where Northwestern holds its annual vigil for Martin Luther King Jr., Aderonmu said.

"Selma," which was released last year, chronicles King's march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., in 1965 to secure equal voting rights. The movie was nominated for four Golden Globes and two Oscars. John Legend and Common won the Golden Globe and Oscar this year for best original song for "Glory."

Northwestern undergraduate students will get free admisson to the screening. Tickets for the general public are on sale for $10 at www.nbo.northwestern.edu. The chapel holds 720 people, and Aderonmu said the event is expected to sell out.
