Jan. 20--A second teen has been charged with murder in connection with a South Side shooting earlier this month that left two teens dead and another wounded.
The Jan. 5 shooting, near 76th and Dorchester streets in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, was the first double homicide of 2016 in Chicago. Joshua Lofton, 17, was ordered held in lieu of $1 million bail in a hearing midday Wednesday.
Sakinah Reed, 17 and Donta Parker, 16, were shot to death and a third boy, 16, survived.
Another teen, 16-year-old Anthony Murphy, was charged as an adult in connection with the shooting.
Prosecutors said Lofton drove Murphy, who fired the shots in the killing. Lofton was arrested on Jan. 6 near 80th and Blackstone and charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, according to prosecutors.
The green SUV he was driving when arrested had been reported stolen in December and was seen on surveillance video turning onto Dorchester Avenue and at a gas station in the neighborhood where an attendant saw a gun on Lofton's lap, according to prosecutors.
On the day of the shooting, prosecutors said Lofton stopped the SUV on Dorchester after following the three people Murphy was about to shoot. Murphy shouted gang slogans at the three before shooting and Lofton drove the wrong way on Dorchester to flee the scene, according to prosecutors.
The 16-year-old boy who survived the shooting identified Murphy as the shooter. Police found .380 caliber shell casings at the scene, along with two fired bullets. A spent casing was found in the SUV on the dashboard when they stopped the SUV on Jan. 6 and police found gunshot residue on the back of the driver's seat, according to prosecutors.
