BRIEF: Search underway for handcuffed parolee who ran away from police

May 05--Police are searching for a parolee who leaped off a second -- floor ramp at the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys station and ran away from authorities while still handcuffed.

The parolee, whose name was not immediately available, was going to be booked at the police station on Sylmar Avenue for violating conditions of his parole when he escaped, LAPD Officer Jack Richter said.

The man, who was on parole after being convicted of burglary, jumped off a ramp at the police building and ran into a surrounding neighborhood. Police set up a perimeter and were actively searching for the man, Richter said.

In San Jose, police Chief Larry Esquivel on April 19 tackled and detained a slaying suspect who broke out of his holding cell and scaled a fence. Esquivel chased the suspect, who was also handcuffed, and tackled him twice before successfully detaining him.
