BRIEF: Search launched for hikers reported missing in frigid mountain pass

Dec. 30--A search has been launched for four hikers who were reported missing overnight near Angeles Crest Highway in La Canada Flintridge, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

The four hikers were reported missing by a family member to the Altadena sheriff's station, said Sgt. Brian Mann. The three men and one woman, described as avid hikers, were reportedly trekking around the Switzer Falls area Monday afternoon, according to NBC4.

The search was launched about 3 a.m. Tuesday after the group's car was found in a parking lot near the Switzer campground, said Lt. Randy Tuinstra. Air support was expected to help at daybreak.

The area is popular because of a waterfall in Arroyo Seco Canyon in the Angeles National Forest. Temperatures dropped to the low 30s overnight in the area's upper elevations.
