BRIEF: Search continues in South L.A. neighborhood for infant remains

April 27--Investigators planned to continue their search Monday for body parts in a Westmont neighborhood where the dismembered body of an infant was found.

How the days-old infant's body came to be dumped in the residential neighborhood is still unknown, said Deputy Amber Smith of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

A young girl playing with her dog Saturday morning made the gruesome discovery in the 1500 block of West 104th Street, KTLA reported.

She was playing ball with her dog before church when she found the infant's leg in her home backyard.

Authorities say the infant was 1 to 3 days old and "significant portions of the body" were missing.

Investigators are asking residents who live in the 1500 block of West 104th Street to examine their yards and trash cans for "suspicious items" that were thrown away.

Authorities say it is possible that additional remains may have been discarded in the neighborhood.

Anyone with details about the infant is urged to call sheriff's homicide detectives Adan Torres or Francis X. Hardiman at (323) 890-5500.
