Oct. 28--Two people are dead and a third is in critical condition after a 19-year-old driver was involved in two crashes within one minute, police said.
No injuries were reported in the first crash when the driver, Michael Owsiany, rear-ended a 2011 Scion around 7:05 p.m. Monday at Springinsguth Road and Dedham Lane in Schaumburg, police said.
Owsiany, of Elk Grove Village, did not stop after the initial accident, police said, and as he made his way down Springinsguth Road, his 2009 Honda hit a 2006 Mitsubishi turning onto Springinsguth from Hartmann Drive. The driver of the Mitsubishi, Erin Semerad, 39, of Schaumburg, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Owsiany and his passenger, Ashley Trenholm, 23, also of Schaumburg, were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Owsiany was pronounced dead at the hospital, and Trenholm remains in critical condition, police said.
The investigation is ongoing, Schaumburg police Cmdr. Dave Wermes said. A witness said Owsiany appeared to be speeding, Wermes said.
