At 12:55 p.m., reigning champ and first-round leader Jordan Spieth headed out for Round 2. Spieth's 6-under par 66 on Thursday gave him a two-shot lead overnight, a cushion that still existed when he teed off. Spieth promptly made birdie at No. 1 and increased his cushion to three shots over Sergio Garcia, who has made thriee birdies on his front nine.
Danny Lee followed his first-round 68 with an even par 36 on his front nine Friday to stay in the thick of things.
Rory McIlroy had himself a, well, eventful front nine. McIlroy, who started the day at 2 under and in a tie for ninth, made birdies at holes 2 and 3. But then he went double bogey, bogey over the next two holes to fall back to 1 over par for the tournament. Despite that short skid, McIlroy remained in the top 10 as he made the turn.
