Nov. 18--When "Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes was growing up in the south suburbs, she dreamed of having children but not a husband.
"I'm one of those people, since I was 5, I could tell you I was going to have kids. I could tell you I was going to have three. I could tell you they were going to be girls," Rhimes told Oprah Winfrey in Sunday's episode of "SuperSoul Sunday." "But I have never wanted to get married. I never played bride. I was never interested."
Rhimes, 45, said it felt "freeing" to share her lack of desire to get married. Winfrey, who is engaged to but never married her fiance, Chicago entrepreneur Stedman Graham, seemed to share Rhimes' sentiment.
"I, sort of, was able to finally, sort of, stand up and say, 'I don't want to get married.' At all," said Rhimes, who grew up in University Park. "I said that out loud. I said it to everybody. I said it to my family. I said it to my friends. I said it to anybody who asked."
Rhimes' shows "Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal" and "How to Get Away With Murder" air Thursdays on ABC. Her book "Year of Yes," about overcoming her shyness, was released last week.
