BRIEF: San Fernando police fatally shoot man after brief car chase

Jan. 12--San Fernando police fatally shot a man Monday after he crashed his car into another vehicle at the end of a pursuit, authorities said.

Police followed the man for about a block before he collided with another vehicle at the busy intersection of San Fernando Road and Hubbard Street shortly before noon.

The man, whose identity has not been released, died at the scene. Police would only say that he was in his 50s.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated with the assistance of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, something that is routine after such shootings, sheriff's officials said.

After the shooting, a body could be seen beneath a tarp next to one of the vehicles. That car's back window appeared to be shattered, possibly by gunfire.

Brian Humphrey, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman, said another person was taken to a hospital from the scene with unspecified injuries.
