BRIEF: San Diego officer kills man who tried to attack him with a knife, police say

July 03--A San Diego police officer shot and killed a 60-year-old man who was attempting to stab him with a knife, police said Friday.

The incident occurred Thursday night in the Black Mountain Ranch community after police received a call that a man had been assaulted by another resident in a condominium complex, according to Lt. Paul Rorrison.

Police went to the suspect's condo. The man came out of his residence holding a knife and refused orders to drop the weapon, Rorrison said.

The police officer fired one shot, Rorrison said. The man was pronounced dead at a hospital in La Jolla.

The name of the dead man was not released. The officer was described only as a veteran of 24 years with the department.
