BRIEF: San Diego investigator shoots suspect in car theft

March 05--An investigator from the San Diego County district attorney's office shot and wounded a suspect in a stolen car investigation Wednesday, police said.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. in the Southcrest neighborhood when members of a regional auto theft task force were attempting to arrest the driver of a suspected stolen car.

As officers blocked the car, the driver put the vehicle in reverse, hitting a police car, according to San Diego police Lt. Mike Hastings. The driver then sped forward near where an officer was standing.

A nearby district attorney investigator fired at the driver, hitting him in the shoulder, Hastings said. The car then crashed into a light pole and the driver, waving a handgun, began running, he said.

The suspect, identified only as an 18-year-old man, was arrested and taken to a hospital where he was listed in good condition.

His passenger, an 18-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries in the crash and also was taken to a hospital and was in good condition, Hastings said.

The name of the investigator, a 16-year veteran of law enforcement, was not released.
