BRIEF: Sailor who died at Great Lakes had enlarged heart: coroner

Feb. 11--After a lengthy investigation, the Lake County coroner's office has determined that a 20-year-old sailor at Naval Station Great Lakes who died Dec. 1 suffered from an abnormally large heart.

The condition, known as dilated cardiomyopathy, caused Andrew Adams' heart to beat irregularly and ultimately stop, Chief Deputy Coroner Orlando Portillo said.

Sue Krawczyk, spokeswoman for Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, said the Navy's review of Adams' death found no contributing factors.

Adams, of Sarasota, Fla., completed his recruit training one day before his death, earning the designation of sailor, Krawczyk said. He was about to leave the base for the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Pensacola, Fla., where he was going to study avionics.
