March 16--SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The White Sox's opening-day starter has been selected, manager Robin Ventura confirmed Monday before the game against the Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.
And the winner is?
None of your business.
"I still don't understand why we need to (announce) that yet," Ventura said.
The simple answer is they don't.
It still looks like Jeff Samardzija, who starts Tuesday and is on schedule for the April 6 start in Kansas City. If the spring rotation holds through the end of camp, it'll be Samardzija, Jose Quintana and John Danks, in that order, going against the Royals in the opening series.
So when will they announce it?
"When it gets closer," Ventura said. "Probably a week, maybe less. The last time I said (Chris) Sale was there and now he's not starting, so ... "
So you don't want to jinx anyone?
"No it's not a jinx," he said. "But there's no sense doing it and then something comes up and you have to change it and then you say 'Why did you change it?'"
But Ventura does know. He just won't say.
"Oh yeah, I know," he said. "Totally. I did it at dinner last night."
