BRIEF: Robber targets taxi drivers on West Side

Sept. 15--Police are warning taxi drivers of a recent string of robberies in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

Two cab drivers were robbed in the 700 block of North Drake Avenue on Sept. 5 and Sept. 7, according to a news release from the Chicago Police Department.

In each incident, an attacker entered a taxi, displayed a handgun and demanded cash and property from the driver. The gunman then ran away, authorities said.

The latest robbery happened around 3:45 a.m. Sept. 7, and the second incident took place at 5:45 a.m. Sept. 5, according to police.

The suspect is a black male, about 5-foot-9 and 190 pounds with short hair and he had a silver handgun, authorities said.

Police encourage residents and taxi drivers to report suspicious people and activity. Drivers are asked to make sure their video equipment is functioning and turned on.

Anyone with information about the robberies should call Area North detectives at 312-744-8263.
