BRIEF: Residents rescued from burning apartment building in Avondale

Jan. 13--Chicago firefighters rescued several residents from a second-story balcony after an extra-alarm fire broke out in a Northwest Side apartment building Wednesday morning.

None of the residents was injured, fire officials said.

The fire was reported around 7 a.m. at a three-story building in the 3200 block of North Central Avenue, officials said. The fire was raised to a 2-11 as crews struggled with frozen hydrants, and firefighters remained at the scene as of 9:45 a.m.

The building in the Avondale neighborhood has 12 residential units on its upper floors, and four commercial spaces on the first floor, according to fire officials.

About 110 firefighters and 40 pieces of equipment were called to the scene.
