Oct. 10--The Chicago Cubs have made a splash in the international market by signing Cuban outfielder Eddy Julio Martinez, according to multiple reports.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Martinez, 20, reportedly had agreed to a $2.5 million contract last weekend with San Francisco but was believed to receive a $3 million deal with the Cubs.
The Cubs would not confirm the signing, and Giants general manager Bobby Evans didn't rule out the possibility of Martinez signing with them.
"That's probably going to be a great story in the near future," Evans told Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News. "It's not a story I'm yet able to share. I've been in consultation with his representatives, and we've talked about keeping this a little closer to the vest for the time being. But at some point soon it will be an interesting story to share.
"Again, I want to be careful not to be presumptuous. But yeah, I think there's still that chance (Martinez signs with the Giants)."
