Oct. 27--A 6.07-pound gold nugget unearthed in Northern California has been sold for at least $350,000 to an anonymous buyer, according to the firm representing the seller.
The buyer, who was described only as a prominent Bay Area resident, made an offer for the "Butte Nugget" that was ultimately accepted by the anonymous seller, said Don Kagan, president of Kagin's Inc. in Tiburon, Calif.
The nugget is one of the largest known natural chunks of gold found in California in modern times.
Kagan would not disclose the sale price, but said the seller accepted an offer ranging from $350,000 to $450,000 at Friday's San Francisco Fall Antiques Show.
"It's a great win-win situation," he said.
The seller, a California man, was prospecting for gold last July when he found the nugget on public land in Butte County.
