BRIEF: Rams not among NFL teams awarded compensatory draft picks

March 11--The loss of free-agent cornerback Janoris Jenkins and safety Rodney McLeod could bring the Rams compensatory draft picks in 2017, but the Rams were not among the 13 teams awarded picks Friday for free agents lost before the 2015 season.

A team losing "more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks," according to the NFL. Based on a formula developed by the NFL Management Council, compensatory free agents are determined by factors such as salary, playing time and postseason honors.

Beginning next year, compensatory picks can be traded.

The NFL awarded 33 compensatory picks. The Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots and San Francisco 49es each received four for the 2016 draft, which will be held April 28-30 in Chicago.

The compensatory picks will be from the third to the sixth rounds.

The Detroit Lions received the highest position with the 95th overall pick.

The Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, Arizona Cardinals, San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers also received compensatory picks.
