BRIEF: Raging water sweeps man away in San Bernardino

Dec. 17--An early-morning downpour filled a flood-control channel with raging water that swept at least one person away in San Bernardino on Wednesday.

Authorities said there were reports of two people being dragged down by stormwater. One man, who was living in the channel, was able to climb out of the rain-swollen channel on his own at about 5 a.m. in the 400 block of Highland Avenue, said Battalion Chief Mike Bilheimer of the San Bernardino City Fire Department.

The man was assisted by emergency personnel and was doing "fine," he said.

The department conducted a two-hour search of the channel but was unable to find anyone else. Bilheimer said the second person may have climbed out on his or her own or was rescued by other means.

Eventually, firefighters called off the search.

Water levels in the flood channel have since subsided.
