BRIEF: Proviso East coach, security guard suspended after alleged choking incident: report

Dec. 19--According to an ABC-Ch. 7 report, Proviso East boys basketball coach Donnie Boyce, also a security guard at the school, has been suspended with pay pending an investigation into allegations that he choked a student while trying to break up an argument at the school.

Boyce played 30 games over parts of two seasons for the Atlanta Hawks. He coached Proviso East, his alma mater, to a second-place finish and a fourth-place finish in the Class 4A state tournament in 2012 and 2013.

Boyce helped lead the Pirates to the first of two consecutive state championships in 1991 and was part of the program's "Three Amigos" (Michael Finley, Sherell Ford).

Attempts by the Tribune to reach Boyce were unsuccessful.
