BRIEF: Prosecutors: Woman charged with permitting sexual abuse of child

July 12--A Chicago woman is accused of looking the other way as a 41-year-old man moved into her home and shared a bedroom with her 13-year-old daughter, whom he sexually abused, prosecutors said.

Aurora Vertiz, 55, who was charged with permitting sexual abuse of a child, knew that her daughter's boyfriend was nearly three decades her senior but still fostered the relationship, Cook County prosecutors alleged in court Saturday.

Within three months of the man moving in, the girl became pregnant, according to court records. Vertiz failed to notify police. The girl gave birth to the baby in January.

"The defendant was aware of the sexual relationship," said Assistant State's Attorney Kim Przekota. "She allowed the man to move into the home and share a bed with her then-13-year-old daughter."

Judge Donald Panarese Jr. set bail for Vertiz, of the 4400 block of South Hermitage Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, at $500,000 during the hearing.

She is scheduled to reappear in court Monday.

It was not immediately known if the man was charged.
