BRIEF: Prosecutors: Man was in 'kill zone' at time of North Chicago slaying

Nov. 06--The Chicago Tribune Media Group's Lake County News-Sun reports: A prosecutor told jurors Wednesday morning that videotape puts Jim McPherson "in the kill zone" just before 18-year-old Janay McFarlane was slain in a North Chicago alley.

Defense attorney Lawrence Wade responded by telling the jury not to be distracted from the main issue in McPherson's trial -- whether there is proof he killed McFarlane -- by dramatic phrases like a "kill zone."

Fisz said evidence and witnesses will prove that McPherson shot the Chicago teen in a gang-related incident in which she was an innocent bystander. McFarlane was killed the same day her younger sister attended an anti-violence speech by President Barack Obama. Wade said the state will be unable to provide evidence that McPherson pulled the trigger on the evening of Feb. 15, 2013.
