BRIEF: Prison riot leaves several inmates in hospital

May 29--Officials from High Desert State Prison in Susanville are still trying to determine what prompted a riot Friday that sent several inmates to hospitals.

The riot broke out about 10:30 a.m. and involved 65 inmates, according to a statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

During the 10-minute fight, many inmates sustained minor injuries -- mostly puncture wounds and lacerations -- that were treated by prison medical staff. To stop the riot, officers fired warning shots, officials said.

Five inmates were transferred to hospitals for medical care. They were listed as stable as of Friday afternoon, officials said.

No prison staff members were injured. Officers confiscated 21 weapons that had been manufactured by inmates, officials said.
