Feb. 26--About 100 firefighters were battling a 200-acre blaze Wednesday in Northern California that started when a prescribed fire blew out of control, authorities said.
What's now known as the Stephens fire began Tuesday about 12:15 p.m. when a preventive burn on private land in Siskiyou County became unmanageable because of unexpected weather and winds, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
Firefighters worked overnight to contain the fire, but the flames have spread to parts of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, authorities said. No structures are threatened.
As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, the blaze was about 30% contained and forest service officials predicted it would be fully contained by midnight Monday.
Rain and snow forecast for later this week are expected to aid in containing the fire.
