BRIEF: President Obama to speak at Brooks Academy during Chicago visit

Feb. 18--President Barack Obama will speak at the Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy on Thursday while he is in Chicago to designate the Pullman Historic District a national monument, the White House said Tuesday.

Obama is to discuss Pullman and the importance of protecting the nation's unique outdoor spaces in his remarks at the school, 250 E. 111th St., the White House said.

The White House did not specify the time of his remarks or say whether his speech will be open to the public. More information is expected later this week.

Pullman, on the Far South Side, is one of the country's first "company towns" and dates to the 1880s. It was home to the now-defunct Pullman Palace Car Co., which made luxurious rail cars, and later the scene of a long, deadly workers strike.

The neighborhood's designation as a national monument puts it in the National Park Service portfolio, a first for Chicago.

Obama's remarks will be streamed live at whitehouse.gov/live.
