BRIEF: President Obama nominates new U.S. marshal for Chicago

Sept. 09--President Barack Obama on Tuesday nominated Calumet City police Chief Edward L. Gilmore to be the U.S. marshal in Chicago.

Gilmore was a Chicago police officer from 1977 to 1987 and was with the Drug Enforcement Agency from 1987 to 2008, where he held managerial posts including deputy chief inspector and assistant special agent in charge.

He has been chief in south suburban Calumet City since 2008.

"Edward Gilmore has dedicated his career to protecting his fellow citizens," Obama said in a statement. "He has displayed courage and persistence in the pursuit of justice, and I am honored to nominate him today to continue his selfless work, as a U.S. marshal."

If the nomination is confirmed by the Senate, he will be the first full-fledged U.S. marshal in Chicago since 2014. Two acting marshals have had the post since then.

The nomination is for a four-year term, and Gilmore would have to step down from his Calumet City post if he is confirmed.

Marshals apprehend fugitives, transport federal prisoners, sell seized assets, protect federal judges and operate a witness security program.
