BRIEF: Pregnant woman killed in hit-and-run; baby survives

Dec. 26--A pregnant woman was killed in a West Side hit-and-run Thursday night, authorities said, but her baby survived.

The woman, 26, was walking across the street in the 4200 block of West Ogden Avenue about 10 p.m. when she was hit by a dark-colored, 2008 Chrysler sedan traveling west, a Chicago police spokesman said. The driver failed to stop and fled the scene, police said.

A person of interest is in police custody pending charges, Officer Michelle Tannehill, a police spokeswoman, said Friday evening.

The woman, identified as Karla Leanos, of the 3000 block of South Keeler Avenue was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and later pronounced dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

According to law enforcement sources, Leanos was pregnant. After the crash, medical personnel delivered the baby, who is expected to survive.

Chicago Tribune's Tony Briscoe contributed.
