BRIEF: Police: Suspect backed up car, struck officer

Jan. 06--A Hinsdale man was charged Monday in connection with an incident in which the man allegedly backed up his car, striking a Clarendon Hills police officer on Dec. 28, police said.

The suspect, Hadi Mobasher Malik, 18, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and aggravated resisting arrest.

Deputy Chief Boyd Farmer said the officer approached the driver at about 9 p.m Dec. 28 as the man sat in a car parked in the lot at the Lions Park Pool. Farmer said the man was smoking marijuana as he got out of the car.

While the officer was standing at the driver's side of the car, the man jumped back into the car, Farmer said.

"The bad guy threw it in reverse with the door open," he said. "The officer fell down, and the car door raked over him."

Farmer said the officer suffered broken ribs, scratches and bruises. He was treated and released from the hospital. After striking the officer, the man fled the parking lot, Farmer said.

Malik was arrested Jan. 1, police said. He posted 10 percent of a $50,000 bond and was released. His first court date is scheduled for Jan. 26 at the DuPage Judicial Center in Wheaton.
