BRIEF: Police shoot man in Hollywood after he allegedly brandishes a knife

June 11--A man was shot by police in Hollywood on Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly brandished a knife, authorities said.

Two police officers responded to Lexington and North Sycamore avenues about 4:16 p.m. on reports that a man was threatening people with a knife, Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Officer Jack Richter said.

The confrontation "rapidly escalated" and police shot the man, who was taken to the hospital in grave condition, Richter said.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, whose paramedics transported the man to the hospital, the man is between 25 and 30 years old.

Police did not disclose how many bullets were fired or how many bullets struck the man.
